Introduction:
HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to the readers of HypnoticAsia.
MEGAN LEE: I’m a singer-songwriter and actor! I love making people happy and I’m obsessed with gummy bears.
Early Years & YouTube:
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you decide to be an entertainer? How did your family feel about it when you told them?
MEGAN LEE: I was always fascinated by TV/film since I could remember. I wanted to sing and dance like performers I saw on my TV screen! I performed in front of my school and family and friends and just always knew that entertaining is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My mom wasn’t sure that if I was fit for entertainment at first when I told her I wanted to be an actor at age 7. Like any other Asian parent, she suggested I should just stay in school and think about it when I grow up but I knew that I wanted to contribute to the world using my craft, which is how I convinced my mom to take me to my first audition! My family is extremely supportive of what I do!
HYPNOTICASIA: We know your mom is very supportive and is always promoting you as an artist. How do you feel about the amazing support your mom (as well as your family) is always giving you?
MEGAN LEE: I literally wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my mom and my family. She is my rock and my best friend. Everything I do and have/will achieve, I owe to my whole family.
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you start uploading your music to YouTube at such a young age?
MEGAN LEE: I was inspired by other fellow Asian-American YouTubers like Ryan Higa, David Choi, Wongfu Productions etc., and thought that YouTube would be a fun platform to share what I love to do with a broader audience.
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have a favorite cover? Why?
MEGAN LEE: My “Lazy Song” cover is probably still my most favorite video because of how interactive it was and getting to work with my friends and family was very special.
HYPNOTICASIA: What was it like working with Kurt Hugo Schneider on your latest BTS covers? Also, what was it like working with Yoandri on “Blood Sweat & Tears”?
MEGAN LEE: Any stories to tell us from the filming? I have always been a fan of Kurt and Sam! I’ve followed their channels for so many years, so getting to work with them was such a surreal experience. Yoandri is the sweetest person and so are Kurt and Sam! I’m very lucky to have worked with them.
K-POP
HYPNOTICASIA: Since you have experience in both South Korea & the USA, what would you say is the most different about being an artist in both countries?
MEGAN LEE: The culture definitely sets the two industries apart. There are both pros and cons in being an artist in both countries.
HYPNOTICASIA: We just have to ask; what was it like working with Yong Jun Hyung on your Korean debut track “8dayz”?
MEGAN LEE: We actually didn’t get to interact that much during the process of “8dayz” haha. I only met him briefly a few times. He seems dope and is super polite!
HYPNOTICASIA: If you can do it again, would you act or do music in Korea?
MEGAN LEE: I get this question a lot. I actually am still involved with the Korean music industry. I have a few collaborations and writing placements with some artists/OSTs. As far as releasing my own music in Korea and acting, I was always open to going back! I’m just waiting for the right moment and timing to release something that everyone would love to hear. Music-wise, I felt like I didn’t get to show my fullest potential, style and abilities during my time in Korea. So, I hope to make an official comeback one day soon to showcase my true-self.
Make It Pop:
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you decide to star in Make It Pop? Did you audition or were you approached to be a part of it?
MEGAN LEE: I sent in a self-tape for the show before it had an official name! The casting process was very long (about 9 months). I’ve always dreamed of starring in my own show where I get to sing dance and act at once!
HYPNOTICASIA: Did the fact that the show was K-POP inspired, interest you to star in it?
MEGAN LEE: Not in particular, though it did make me curious! I was just so excited to sing, dance and act in one project!
HYPNOTICASIA: What was it like being able to show your talents of dancing, singing and acting on the show?
MEGAN LEE: I love musicals and grew up watching so many different kinds and dreamed of working on my own musical as well. In a way my dreams came true because Make It Pop was a musical comedy series. It made the experience extra special for me.
The Voice:
HYPNOTICASIA: First, we’d like to congratulate you on your participation on The Voice. Can you tell us a little about your experience?
MEGAN LEE: Thank you so much! Auditioning for The Voice was on my bucket list since the first season, so being a part of the latest season was pretty surreal.
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you choose to perform “Killing Me Softly” for your audition?
MEGAN LEE: The song is held very dear to me. It’s one of the songs that I’ve practiced a lot as a trainee and felt that it really represented my style, the artist that I became.
HYPNOTICASIA: What was it like being mentored by Alicia Keys?
MEGAN LEE: She is so graceful, wise and so nice!! She is one of my favorite artists and it was a dream to have worked with her.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could do it all over again, would you audition for The Voice (or a similar show) again?
MEGAN LEE: I think I’m done with competitions for a while haha, but if I went back in time, yes I would do it all over again.
What’s Next?
HYPNOTICASIA: Have you been working on anything new?
MEGAN LEE: My first EP! I’ve been writing lots and it has been delayed so much. Hopefully it can come out sometime this year.
HYPNOTICASIA: Can we expect more acting and music from you this year?
MEGAN LEE: Yes, I’m continuing to work hard making more content for my fans on my YouTube as well as music. I’ve been also writing music for other artists as well (pitching for K-POP and in the states) so there is lots to look forward to.
Conclusion:
HYPNOTICASIA: Is there an artist you’d like to work with that you haven’t already?
MEGAN LEE: I would love to work with Charlie Puth! He’s an amazing artist and I’m a total fan of his writing.
HYPNOTICASIA: Anything else you’d like your fans to know?
MEGAN LEE: Thank you ALWAYS for your love and support! There will lots more music and content coming out so please stay tuned to my socials for updates! Love you all so much!
