[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] NATURE Talk Comeback, Mockumentary & More!

NATURE is a South Korean girl group formed by n.CH Entertainment. They have members: Sohee, Aurora, Saebom, Lu, Chaebin, Haru, Loha, and Uchae. The K-POP girl group made their debut in 2018. In the same year, they received the “New Hallyu Rookie” award and in 2020, the “Music Hot Star” award at the Soribada Awards. Nature’s agency recently announced that they’ll be making a comeback very soon!

We had the opportunity to interview the ladies of Nature and we got to know them a little better! They told us all about their upcoming return to the music scene, and their current Mock Series!

• SOHEE: Hello, HyponoticAsia readers! This is NATURE’s big sis Sohee! Nice to meet you all.
• AURORA: I’m NATURE’s shining Aurora. 
• SAEBOM: Hello, this is NATURE’s Saebom! [I’m] so grateful to meet you and I appreciate that I can say hello to all.
• LU: Hello, this is NATURE’s leader Lu.
• CHAEBIN: Hello, I’m NATURE’s twinkling Chaebin. 
• HARU: Hello everyone! I’m Haru, known as NATURE’s cutie!
• LOHA: Aloha~ Hi! I’m Loha, NATURE’s happy virus!
• UCHAE: Hello, this is NATURE’s youngest one Uchae.

In 2018, you received the ‘New Hallyu Rookie’ award and in 2020 the ‘Music Hot Star’ award at the Soribada Awards. How did it feel?

• SOHEE: In 2018, I wasn’t a part of the group. But in 2020 since it was the first prize after I joined NATURE, it meant the whole world to me. The award gave me the motivation to work harder as [a] group member and worked as a great synergy in performance. [I] was happier than ever. ♥
• SAEBOM: When we got the Rookie Award, even though we really just debuted, we were surprised and amazingly grateful. I would like to show my appreciation once more.
• LU: As the awards are given with the endeavor of our fans, I appreciate our fans the most. And I wish to be back on stage with our fans quickly.
• CHAEBIN: They were the awards we never expected. We were both very happy and proud of ourselves. We will do our best to receive more awards.
• HARU: We were astonished because we never imagined receiving the award. We will do our best every time to suit the awards.
• LOHA: Frankly speaking, when we received the awards we were both astonished and filled with happiness because we questioned whether we deserve these. Thus, we appreciate all the fans and [the] awards remind us to work harder.
• UCHAE: It wasn’t long after our debut. But it was the greatest honor to receive such big awards and appreciated our fans a lot.

For the members who auditioned/participated in Survival Shows both in South Korea and China, tell us a little about the experience.

• SOHEE: Back then the fact that 101 trainees need to compete and I must survive among those competitors came as a big burden along with worries. While filming, there were a lot of hardships physically and psychologically. I still have the vivid memory of practicing overnight every day. However, come to think of it, if it were not [for] the survival show, I wouldn’t be here by now. It was the opportunity for me to grow mentally, and physically. It helped me a lot in my life until now and gave me the courage not to fear anything!
• AURORA: Through the audition program, I learned the value of every stage and the importance of competence. I got to cherish being on the stage and the time spent with fans. 

We see that you’ve recorded a few OST’s “Spring Turns to Spring”, “The World of My 17”, and “Delivery”; how different is recording for an OST vs. recording for an album?

• SOHEE: For recording OSTs, I need to impersonate myself as the character from the drama and sing with emotion as if the character [is] singing. I need to study those elements. For our album recording, I need to pour out my own emotion about the song candidly!!
• SAEBOM: When recording OSTs, I sing to make characters from the drama stand out more. However when recording for our album, I sing [with] our members and me.
• LU: While I sing in a softer voice to follow the flow for OSTs, I sing in a more energetic way for songs [on] our album. It’s because I need to consider being on the stage.
• CHAEBIN: I have participated in recording OSTs quite a lot of times. When I record OSTs, I consider how to fill up the features and charms of missing members.

What do you believe has changed the most since your debut, individually and as a group?

• SOHEE: As I debuted, my weakness and immature parts got firmer and mature. When I was a trainee, I just trained non-stop, but after my debut, I got the know-how of practicing with more flexibility and efficiency.
• AURORA: I got more patient compared to before.
• SAEBOM: After debut, the biggest change is I got to have my biggest support, LEAFs! [I’m] extremely grateful. They love me without any special conditions, and it’s the kind of love not everyone can be granted.
• LU: The fact that I have fans after debut is the biggest change and the greatest merit. When I think that now I have fans who love and support what I do, I get to focus more on my work.
• CHAEBIN: I practice with bigger responsibility and I get to concentrate more on the group work.
• HARU: My Korean improved!!!! Rather than freaking out on stage, I got to enjoy myself more on stage as a group.
• LOHA: Because I debuted at a young age of 18 years old, I was at the studio training while my friends were at school studying. I let go a lot of my ordinary girl Yejin Kang’s life. Also, now I feel more natural to be called as Loha rather than Yejin Kang.  More so, to talk about group life, when I speak out, I consider the group’s opinion rather than my own. And now I think [of the] group first.
• UCHAE: As an individual, because of the busy schedule, my life pattern has changed. And this made me care more about health. As a group [member], I got to think of members’ thoughts and feelings more deeply.

From all of your releases, which is your favorite song and concept? 

• SOHEE: My favorite songs and concepts are both ‘Dream About U’ & ‘Bing Bing’. These two are the songs that portray NATURE’s identity and characteristics the best. Also, they suit NATURE members the most.
• AURORA: I like ‘Girls’ and the girl crush concept.
• SAEBOM: I would say ‘Girls’ and ‘Bing Bing‘. We had great teamwork and had a great time performing.
• LU: I’m choosing ‘Allegro Cantabile’ from NATURE’s debut album [Girls and Flowers]
• CHAEBIN: I love ‘Bing Bing’ the most from the album [Oopsie (My Bad)]. The concept and the song matched members well.
• HARU: ‘Bing Bing’ from the album [Oopsie (My Bad)]! The concept suits every single member of NATURE.
• LOHA: Personally I love ‘Oopsie’ and ‘Drinkin’’! For concepts, I like girl crush or dreamy concepts! I’m good at rap and performance, and I have the confidence that I would suit very well with these concepts along with my facial expressions or star quality.
• UCHAE: It’s ‘Bing Bing’ from the album [Oopsie (My Bad)]!

Which artists do you look up to the most? 

• SOHEE: The artist I respect the most is IU!! IU is an all-rounder who is good at acting, singing and more. She tops in so many fields and I would love to take after those qualities.
• AURORA: It’s Big Bang.
• SAEBOM: I have so many. Artists I followed and respected since I was young are Avril Lavigne and YounHa. I recently started liking Madison Beer.
• LU: In Korea, I love IU and Crush. For pop stars, I love Stevie Wonder and Chet Baker.
• CHAEBIN: In Korea I love Ailee, for oversea artists, I love Ariana Grande.
• HARU: I look up to Michael Jackson and TWICE’s MOMO.
• LOHA: I look up to BLACKPINK the most! Since I was a trainee, I watched reality/stage clips of BLACKPINK a lot and got inspired by how I should perform when I debut. Whenever I see the performance of BLACKPINK, I get astonished by their attractiveness in seizing the stage. I wished my fans also feel the same way when they look at me in the future. Also, every member respectively has awesome charms. They have so many great elements to take after and I look up to them until now.
• UCHAE: I look up to Seol Hyun and Suzy. They’re all so pretty and talented in K-POP and acting.

When you aren’t promoting and performing, what do you enjoy doing? 

• SOHEE: When we don’t have schedules, I usually stay at home watching Netflix or lie down and rest. Haha. Sometimes I go driving or meet friends to chat. But mostly I love staying at home!!
• AURORA: I enjoy shopping.
• SAEBOM: I have two cats at home and on the days we’re free, I’m busy taking care of these two. Also, I write journals, study, and do other stuff at home rather than meeting friends.
• LU: I sleep, read books, listen to music, clean and work out.
• CHAEBIN: I usually drink two cups of coffee, so I love going to cafés or traveling.
• HARU: I either love to cook, clean the house or watch YouTube.
• LOHA: Since I love watching films, I either watch movies on Netflix or go to the theater. Also, I meet NATURE members and hang out. If I have a lot of free time, I go back home where my family is and spend time together. 
• UCHAE: I either go traveling, go to the café or stay at home to watch movies and eat some good food.

Is there a genre or concept in which you’ve always wanted to try?

• SOHEE: Among concepts I haven’t tried, I would love to try the cute and girly concept before I age more!!! 
• AURORA: I want to try the girl crush concept!
• SAEBOM: We have never done anything that’s dramatically sexy or dramatically pure. The concepts we have done were somewhat vague. So I would love to try boldly sexy! Extra girl crush! Extra pure! concepts.
• LU: I wish for us to try the concept that’s bright, powerful and energetic which members can all enjoy.
• CHAEBIN: I want to try the pure but sexy concept like Apink’s ‘I’m So Sick’.
• HARU: I want to try something like STAY C’s ‘SO BAD’!
• LOHA: I have always wanted to try a super cool girl crush concept with suits or uniforms on! However, I’m not afraid to try any concepts. Because every single member from our group has distinct traits both as a group and as an individual. Thus, whatever concept we try, I’m sure we’ll perform the best we can.
• UCHAE: I would choose girl crush and a pure-sexy concept! I also want to try the concept that we all wear suits.

We heard you are releasing a “Mockumentary”! What was it like working on that? What should we expect? Any funny stories you can share?

• SOHEE: We didn’t have much time to show the chemistry between members a lot, but through mockumentary, we will be able to show a lot of those parts. Also since it’s the content [that’s] produced by us, the advantage is music-wise and drama-wise, [so] it’s all very fresh. It includes our own unique features and those are the parts to keep your eyes on.
• AURORA: The day before we filmed the mockumentary, I filmed the web drama until dawn. I remember it being very busy the next day.
• SAEBOM: Meeting composer Myung-Sun Yoon was the most memorable thing. I first thought he would be intimidating because he is a big-named composer. However, I got so much energy from him with his humor and enthusiasm.
• LU: The very first filming(episode 1) was about announcing [to] our boss I would quit NATURE. I had to be serious, but seeing my boss’s face, I had a hard time controlling my laughter.
• CHAEBIN: As it’s self-produced, I’m the most curious about LEAF’s reaction.
• HARU: Since it’s the first time coming up with this kind of choreography, I’m curious how fans/public will react after the release.
• LOHA: It was a lot of fun filming [the] mockumentary with members when it has been such a long time we didn’t do something together. Sometimes I got tired, but it was still good to be together. Also getting our fortune told with only names and time of birth was very intriguing. I was with Chaebin and Sohee back then.
• UCHAE: When we were filming the scene walking the street of Itaewon, it excited me because it felt like I came to hang out.

We’ve heard your upcoming album will be released in 2022; what can we look forward to? Concepts, style, sound, etc.

• SOHEE: As I said before, it’s the concept, song, and choreography no one had tried so far! It’s unique because trot, edm, and idol style are mixed together. But as the song is released, you’ll be able to tell that it’s NATURE! I can say for sure that once you listen to the music, see the stage, you’ll never forget it.
• AURORA: It’s the concept no one has ever tried before
• SAEBOM: We’re really preparing something massive. I can’t tell you everything, but to give you one, it will be three hits in a row! They’ll all be in different styles so can’t just explain one.
• LU: I wish for our fans from overseas to love our colorful aspects.
• CHAEBIN: It’s the concept we’ve never shown before and no other girl groups have tried either. It will be really fresh.
• HARU: No idol groups have tried this kind of concept before!!! Interesting, fresh vibe with cool choreography. [The] dance is the charming point!
• LOHA: Neither the concept nor the style is something we have tried before. Moreover, there are so many interesting elements in the performance, that the public would feel a little surprised at first. However, I’m sure we can make the very special stage.
• UCHAE: It might seem to be a bit far from trendy music, but it’s definitely fun to listen to and has the old-school vibe! I wish you pay close attention to our highlight part, [the] really cool choreography.

Is there any country you want to visit for a world tour?

• SOHEE: I wish to go anywhere where LEAFs are.
• AURORA: I would like to visit my home country China and the countries where LEAFs are from.
• SAEBOM: New York! I have been to New York when I was in university and it was amazing. So if I can go to perform, it would be more than a blessing.
• LU: I want to go everywhere.. I can’t just pick one.
• CHAEBIN: When it comes to world tours, it would be the best to visit everywhere. But to choose one, I would like to go to the US.
• HARU: USA! LA!
• LOHA: Personally I would love to go to the US! It’s because my family and friends are in the US, but since it’s far from here I couldn’t see them often. So I want to show my family, friends, and LEAFs me performing on stages. Also while I’m in the US for the tour, I want to spend time with family and friends!
• UCHAE: I really wanted to go to the US. But I would love to go to any country where our fans are.

Do any of the members have an interest in acting in dramas, movies, or musicals? If so, what type of role?

• SOHEE: I’m interested in acting in dramas. I want to try different characters that are a bit far from my appearance. For example, the role IU acted in ‘My Mister’!
• AURORA: I want to try comedy shows.
• SAEBOM: I majored in musical in university, so I have always considered joining [a] musical. Based on my musical career, I want to try drama, film, and everything. Wish I can try the worst of all, villain characters.
• LU: I love thriller or mystery novels. I want to take the role of the detective.
• CHAEBIN: I’m interested in acting in drama, movies and musicals. Different from how I look, I want to try the role of an easy-going girl.
• LOHA: I’m also considering an acting career. Roles I want to try are a mischievous youngest daughter or cold-blooded and aloof character!

If you could collaborate with any artist (K-POP or not), who would it be and why?

• SOHEE: IU! She is the senior I respect the most and I think my voice tone and IU’s voice tone match very well. ♥
• AURORA: I wasn’t able to be on the stage with members I debuted together through the audition program THE9. So I would like to be on NATURE stage with them.
• SAEBOM: I really want to be on the stage with Avril Lavigne who I loved the most since middle school!!!!!! I want to collaborate with her. Even if it’s not [a] collaborated stage, it would be so amazing to see her for real even just once.
• LU: BTS, they have enhanced Korea’s prestige and they’ve got such a trendy style. Thus, if we can collaborate, an amazing album will be made.
• CHAEBIN: I love Ariana Grande and her music. So I really wish to meet her once.
• HARU: For me, it’s Tinashe. I liked her from the past. Also since she’s an amazing dancer, I would love to be on the stage with her.
• LOHA: The artist I would like to collaborate with is Dua Lipa! I love her attractive voice, the physical that grabs attention on stage, and the ability to turn any song into her own style. Thus, I wish to be on the stage with her when I get the chance. 
• UCHAE: Seol Hyun and Suzy I already mentioned! I covered their choreography since young as I love them. I would be more than happy to collaborate with them.

To your fanclub Leaf, is there anything you want to say to them?

• SOHEE: This is something I always say to LEAFs. Sorry that we kept you waiting for so long, and thanks to all who stayed with us! The word I love the most in this world is ‘We’. Like ‘you and I’ and ‘I and you’, it is such a pretty word that gives you the feeling that you belong somewhere. Using the word ‘We’ I would like to tell LEAF, ‘We will be happy together’. LEAF and I, LEAF and NATURE are ‘We’!! I appreciate [you] a lot and love [you] the most. ♥
• AURORA: Thank you very much for waiting and supporting us even in this COVID-19 pandemic. You have waited long and we will be back real soon~
• SAEBOM: LEAFs! You have survived through 2021! Thank you for staying by our side even with hardships. This is something I say, let’s stay together forever and I love you!! ♥
• LU: Dear LEAFs, you have all been waiting for a long time, right? We have prepared many things thinking of LEAFs. Wish you love these. Thank you.
• CHAEBIN: Thank you for waiting for us even in this long hiatus. We will put our best effort into our comeback to live up to your expectations. Until then, stay safe! I love you️! ♥
• HARU: Although it’s not easy to meet because of COVID-19, let’s wait a bit and see more!!! We’re so sorry for keeping you waiting. We will be back real quick, so stay tuned!! Love you, LEAFs!!!
• LOHA: LEAFs, you all must have been exhausted waiting for us. I really appreciate [you] for not letting us go and keep on waiting for our comeback. To live up to your expectation, we will practice harder and be back with cooler stages. As we couldn’t make many memories in 2021, let’s enjoy twice as much in 2022! I promise to be Loha who can give love to others as I am being loved so much. Thank you and I love you.
• UCHAE: I’m sorry for always asking you to wait. We will prepare our best and be back with the best stage that will live up to everyone’s wish. I love you, LEAFs.
