Up and coming Japanese Pop-R&B influenced band, DIOS, has announced the release of their latest single, ‘Paper Plane’. The single will be made available on all major digital streaming platforms on 31 March 2022,Thursday.
As the sixth single to be released collectively as the band, DIOS, ‘Paper Plane’ has the main theme of overcoming trauma. The lyrics describe a feeling of foreboding resignation that haunts a protagonist, as though everything can go wrong, and it feels like a game of Zero-sum. ‘Paper Plane’ holds a major contrast in music composition, as compared to past singles by DIOS such as ‘Betrayal’ and ‘Theatre’. Characterized by beatmaker and keys, Sasanomaly’s glitch-hop beat, the aggressive guitar techniques of Ichika Nito, and the song’s unpredictable build-up across moods, there is a tug-of-war in emotions of frustration, the longing for something better, and the fear of losing one’s self.
Tanaka, vocalist of DIOS shares, “31 March 2022 is not only the release date of our latest single, it also marks our 1-year anniversary as a band. We have learnt a lot from each other, from being comfortable with each other, working and making music together, to simply being on this exploratory music journey together. This is why the release of ‘Paper Plane’ means a lot to us. With how the single was composed, ‘Paper Plane’ sets the tone for what is to come in our upcoming debut album. It is currently in the works, and we are excited to share it with you when it is ready.”
While the band is fairly new as a band in the Japanese music scene, having formed in 2019, they are made up of stellar individual artists in their own right. This includes rapper, vocalist, and lyricist, Tanaka (formerly known as Boku no Lyric no Bōyomi), guitarist Ichika Nito who currently helms the crown for the best guitarist in Japan, and beatmaker and gaming music composer, Sasanomaly. The band brings together a wide range of influences to the table that compliments not only the individual sounds of each band member but also presenting to open-minded experimental music heads an all-new expressive audiovisual palette that fits the dynamic and coherence of the band.
Having released 5 singles in the span of the past year, DIOS has had new-found success with a sold-out solo show, “DAWN: 1st Man Live”, as well as singles ‘Darkroom’ and ‘Theatre’ appointed as theme songs for television dramas, the Hulu Original “Future Century SHIBUYA” and “Upper and Lower Relationships” respectively. DIOS’ upcoming debut album is slated for release in Q2 of 2022, which will see the band embark on a 5-city summer promotional and live concert tour in Japan.
