On November 5th, 2022, Hawaiian reggae pop musical group, Kolohe Kai, took over the famous outdoor venue. Selling out the Greek Theatre, the group which was formed in 2009, headlined their first concert in Los Angeles, California. They were formed by lead singer and songwriter Roman De Peralta.
The night had an interesting mix of your usual LA vibe with a chill Hawaiian feel.
Opening Act – Anuhea
Fellow Hawaiian singer-songwriter, Anuhea, who also made her debut back in 2009 joined the tour as an opening act. She performed her track “Big Deal”. She excitedly revealed during the show that this track actually played on the radio in Hawaii. Anuhea also sang “Simple Love Song” which seemed to be the fan favorite as the audience sang along. The singer-songwriter ended her set with her track “Higher Than The Clouds”. She didn’t forget to announce that her band will be on tour, including stops in California this December.
One thing to note is that her merchandise was super cute. It included a shaved ice pin, a spam musubi pin, and an “Aloha Thyself” tie dye shirt.
The Main Act – Kolohe Kai
Next up was the main act! Kolohe Kai came out to the cheers of the crowd and started off the set with “Summer to Winter”. During the song “Kiss That I Never Had” someone was proposed to in the pit and he congratulated them.
There were many “events” during their performances. During “Round and Around” the audience turned on their phone lights. This may not seem as special to some who have seen this at other concerts, but there was something special about being outdoors.
Many of their tracks had the audience singing and clapping along, such as, “Good morning Hawaii”, “He’e Roa”, and “Dream Girl”.
Kolohe Kai Says Everyone Is Beautiful
Throughout the performance of “I Think You’re Beautiful” the music video played on the screens and portrayed that bullying is not okay. Lead singer Roman made sure to clearly let the audience know that the message that they want to give the audience is that everyone is beautiful.
Kolohe Kai began their career in the music industry by making remakes and covers as most groups do. They decided to add in at least one cover for this show and covered Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”.
The Fan Favorites
They couldn’t leave out fan favorite tracks “Heartstrings” and “Ehu Girl”. The audience singing was on a whole other level for these; shoutout to those behind me that knew all the lyrics! “Ehu Girl” was announced as the final song and Kolohe Kai said goodbye.
Of course, it wasn’t really over yet! The band came back one more time to perform their encore song “Cool Down”.
The tour was held to promote their 5th original album”Hazel Eyes”; which is also the name of their tour. It was clear after seeing them perform that they genuinely enjoyed performing.
If you have a chance to catch the group in the future, be sure to do so. Unfortunately this was the last stop of this tour but they’ll definitely be performing somewhere again.
