VeeAlwaysHere: Hi everyone! I’m VeeAlwaysHere, but you can call me Vee since we’re basically friends now 🙂 I’m a Korean-American music artist based in Los Angeles.
How did you get into music? Inspirations?
VeeAlwaysHere: I got into music when I was 8 or 9 years old. I came home after school and instead of doing my homework, I turned the TV on. MTV was on, and I spent all day just sitting there and watching in complete awe. I wanted to be just like all of those people I saw on the screen. The only problem was… I grew up in Russia, where people don’t speak English and music in English was the only type of music I really wanted to make, even though I didn’t even understand it. Music truly changed my life.
Is there a track you would recommend for those who want to check out your music?
VeeAlwaysHere: I could definitely recommend “right now (feat. jujuland)” where I’m exploring my Korean roots for the first time in my music career, as well as “get away” – this song is just a good representation of me as a music artist in general.
Any fun stories from the “other side” music video filming?
VeeAlwaysHere: The entire process was really fun, but here’s something that’s never happened to me before… after we wrapped, I spent ALL NIGHT editing this music video, not because I was in a rush to put it out, but only because I was so excited to watch it myself. On the drive home from set, the only thing I could think about was editing it, I was just so impatient!
How was acting in your own music video?
VeeAlwaysHere: It was a really fun experience. I am incredibly lucky to be sharing the screen with the amazing Nava Rose. She looks amazing in this video and she was so professional and so cool on set. If I could have her be in every music video, trust me, I would! But don’t take my word for it, go see it for yourself!!
You have a new EP entitled “ego:playlist I” that was just released! Tell us all about it!
VeeAlwaysHere: “ego: playlist I” is the most challenging project I’ve ever worked on. The goal for this album was to completely step outside of my comfort zone and introduce some new sounds into my music. Every song was a new experience for me and it feels so satisfying to know that people really like it, because I was very nervous to release it.
How did you decide which tracks would be included on this specific EP?
VeeAlwaysHere: It really sounds like I’m lying, but I swear, the answer to that just kind of revealed itself to me. There were some songs that didn’t make the cut, but it was such a natural process, I didn’t really have to sit there and decide. It’s like these songs just spoke to me and told me what to do with them. It was a very strange, but a cool experience.
We saw that for “right now (feat. jujuland)” there were parts of the song in Korean. How was working on that track?
VeeAlwaysHere: It was so scary! I wasn’t fortunate enough to be raised with the language, but I really wanted to do something in it. The featured artist on the song jujuland was very helpful and guided me through those lines I had to sing. I’m just starting to learn Korean, so this song is definitely a huge motivation for me to keep going! I was so elated when I saw everyone’s reactions and feedback. I definitely want to do more!
You have a few collaborations on the new EP. Is there an artist you would like to collaborate with that you have not had the chance to work with yet?
VeeAlwaysHere: There are too many to name, but one thing I can say is EVERYONE whom I’ve collaborated with so far did an amazing job of bringing their world into mine, and I’m always very grateful for that! I always learn something new from everyone I work with.
You handle the songwriting, production, and recording of your music. What is your process like for all 3 parts?
VeeAlwaysHere: I always start every song with a clear feeling or emotion I want the listener to experience while the song (that’s not even made yet) is playing. Once I establish that, I do whatever it takes to arrive at that. The rest of the process is pretty random and bizarre, but I really enjoy that part of it. I never know what’s gonna come out or how I’m going to get there, so making music is always a very fun process.
If you were not doing music, what do you believe you would be doing instead?
VeeAlwaysHere: Learning languages (specifically English) is a big part of my life. I had to teach myself English when I was pretty young to be able to pursue my dream, and even with my music career, I’m very passionate about helping people do the same. So… that would probably be my main focus if I weren’t doing music, although I don’t even know that I’d even learned English if it weren’t for music 🙂
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
VeeAlwaysHere: I’m all about experimenting and trying new things in my music, so one thing I can tell you for sure is that you’ll be able to witness me exploring a lot of different sounds and vibes. Also… I already kind of started working on my second “playlist” 🙂
What advice would you give to someone who wants to do music?
VeeAlwaysHere: Be unapologetically you with every song you make. Don’t make songs that you think people want to hear – do it for you. It’s not that crazy to think that if you love this song, there are people out there who will love it too. Make sure it makes you happy first.
This or That:
Coffee or Milk Tea?
VeeAlwaysHere: Coffee for sure!
Brunch or Lunch?
VeeAlwaysHere: Ooh, that’s tough. I would have to say lunch.
Eating only ice cream for the rest of your life or Never eating ice cream again?
VeeAlwaysHere: I’d be completely fine never eating ice cream again, honestly.
Morning or Night?
VeeAlwaysHere: I am a 100% night owl! I hate it, but I also love it at the same time. There’s something magical about working while everyone’s asleep… I can’t explain it.
Movies or Games?
VeeAlwaysHere: Movies all day!!
