HANABIE. kicked off their eponymous tour Friday, May 17th, on the East Coast in New Haven, CT. The Japanese quartet consists of Yukina (vocals), Matsuri (guitar), Hettsu (bass), and Chika (drums). They have self-described themselves as Harajuku-core (a colorful and flamboyant street fashion style). However, their fashion aesthetics may be misleading to a passerby. As a metalcore band, they incorporate various aspects of metal, hardcore punk, and nu metal in their music.
Decked in pastels and bright accessories, the ladies kicked off the night with “Otaku Raburii Densetsu.” Opening the set with this song was an interesting choice – the song begins with a few lines in a higher pitch range, before diving into Yukina’s trademark growl. This stark contrast can be found woven in most of HANABIE.’s discography, and starting the night with this track set the tone for what was to come.
HANABIE Interact with the Audience
From here the intensity of their performance hardly ceased. Fans were headbanging along with the women throughout the set! The four-piece act maintained a high-spirited atmosphere that filled the entire venue.
Even a language barrier was not enough to detract the crowd from enjoying the energy from the musicians. There was a visual contrast between the bright hues of blue and pink on stage versus the crowd decked in all black. Between watching HANABIE.’s electrifying stage and observing crowd surfers (including a person in a wheelchair) make their way to the barricade, the whole show was a delightfully loud spectacle.
HANABIE. left fans invigorated with their dynamic vocal range and intense instrumentals. Finishing the night with encore songs “SUNRISE MISO – SOUP” and “Sentimental Heroine.” The band concluded a successful first stop of their tour. HANABIE. is currently on tour.
