Foreign media have recently shown great interest in K-pop group Girls’ Generation, after they won a YouTube award.
American CNN reported that Korean girls group Girls’ Generation won the prize of “Music Video of the Year” in the first YouTube Music Awards held in New York on Nov.3 and that the popularity of the pop group is a national phenomenon in Korea.
CNN posted an article on its website on Nov.4 with a title “K-pop group Girls’ Generation beats Miley, Lady Gaga to first place in YouTube awards.” It reported that while Girls’ Generation may be unknown to an American audience, the pop group is a national phenomenon in Korea and introduced the the group’s music video “I Got a Boy.”
The news media also reported that “It’s not the group’s first foray into the United States, as the ladies appeared on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ and also ‘Live! With Kelly’ last year.”
Girls’ Generation drew attention from foreign media as they were the only Asians to win a YouTube award in last weekend’s prize-giving ceremony.
A representative of SM Entertainment, the group’s agency, said “The award means Korean artists won against world-famous celebrities and proved that Korean music and singers are able to lead the world in music. For that the foreign media showed their keen interest in the prize winning of the group.”
