Singer and songwriter, Dabit makes a comeback almost two years since his last release of “Gimme Magic.” It has been six years since the Korean-American artist made his debut and now he returns with a completely new track!
He released the song “Don’t Wanna Go” which he worked on with McKay and 220musik. The music video was filmed in the Philippines this time around and it is very different than his past releases.
It’s been a while since we’ve interviewed Dabit so we caught up with him to see what he’s been up to lately. To find out more about his new release and to view his music video, check out the interview below!
HYPNOTICASIA: It has been almost two years since your last release, what have you been up to?
DABIT: I’ve been MIA for quite a while. I moved from Seoul to Incheon, I became co-host of “K-pop Connection” and I was kind of just figuring out my life. I guess I needed a transition period to get myself organized before I started making music again. But I’m honestly done transitioning. lol It was boring.
HYPNOTICASIA: You have released a new single! Tell us a little about your new song, “Don’t Wanna Be.”
DABIT: With glamorized relationships all over social media, I think people nowadays have this ridiculous expectation for their partner. “Don’t Wanna Be” is about breaking free from such people who try to dictate your worth.
HYPNOTICASIA: What was it like working with McKay and 220musik?
DABIT: Great things come when you let go of your ego a little bit. I think I was always a little scared of working with multiple people who would have a say in the song-writing process. I have such a distinct way of doing things, but surprisingly, the collaboration went smoothly and turned out better than I imagined!
HYPNOTICASIA: Tell us about the new music video for your song “Don’t Wanna Be”; Where was it filmed and what was the process like?
DABIT: We filmed the music video in La Union, Philippines for two days. The weather forecast said it was going to rain both days but luckily the rain held out until right after we finished filming our last roof-top scene! I got to run in the rain to my celebratory meal and, although I hate the rain, it was kinda extra refreshing to know that I was finished and could get as messy as I wanted to! I was honestly just excited to eat a butt-load of carbs!
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve performed in various countries over the years, what has been the most memorable?
DABIT: Although I’ve been to so many places, my first overseas performance in Tunisia will always have a special place in my heart! But every place I go to is tied with a very special memory!
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you personally have a favorite song of yours? If so, which one? Also, would this be the track you introduce to someone who may not know your music?
DABIT: “Don’t Wanna Be” haha. I always end up liking my most recent track because it’s the most current reflection on who I am now. I think it’s also a step closer to the direction I want to take musically as a singer-songwriter.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who would you like to collaborate with on a track?
DABIT: I would love to collaborate with Wendy of Red Velvet! She was THE STAR of “Psycho.”
HYPNOTICASIA: We must ask, how is Kano (his dog)?
DABIT: Kano is getting older and has white hair under his chin now. He’s been going through a midlife crisis but overall, he’s happy and cute as ever!
HYPNOTICASIA: What are your plans for the rest of 2020? Can we expect more music?
DABIT: My 2020 goal is to really grind out as much music as I can. F
