Together with Inspector and Out of Control Army, Japan‘s Hey-Smith opened for Panteón Rococó on September 27, 2024, at Toyota Arena. It was an electrifying evening of ska-punk.
Quickly Begins the Show
Hey-Smith fascinated the audience from the first note of their song with “Fellowship Anthem,” a flurry of energy accompanied by booming trumpet parts and a flawless combination of punk rock and ska. The excitement of the audience was evident as the six-piece band launched into their intense performance. Hey-Smith’s second single, “Still Ska Punk,” was true to its name; it combined fast, distorted guitar riffs with catchy melodies to prove dedication to the genre.
They took the lead and commanded the stage with pure charm, while the strong horn section provided rich, bright sound that kept the intensity level high throughout the performance. “Say My Name” was one of the band’s best songs of the night. It was a powerful example of how well they could blend intense punk rock passion with ska beats. As the song changed into the harder-hitting single “Inside of Me,” which increased the tension even more, the audience couldn’t help but get absorbed in the infectious energy.
A little change in tone was introduced with “Into The Soul,” which provided a more meditative, melodic element to offset the set’s relentless drive. The crowd was swaying to the brass-infused melodies of “Endless Sorrow” and “Fog And Clouds,” which showcased the band’s amazing flexibility by fusing intense music with sympathetic lyrics.
Quickly Comes to an End
Hey-Smith cranked up the volume as the concert was about to close with “We Sing Our Song” and “Be The One,” two songs that further demonstrated their ability to blend fast-paced, high-energy rhythms with sing-along hits. The audience enthusiastically chanted with the band throughout the choruses when prompted. The enthusiasm in the audience peaked just before they performed their last song, “Dandadan.”
Hey-Smith is one of the most exciting J-Rock ska-punk bands around right now, and their concert proved it. Even though they were the opening act, their contagious enthusiasm and outstanding musicianship made a lasting impact. This primed the audience for who would come later. The band’s performance at Toyota Arena was a high point of the evening! It captivated the attention of the audience with their thrilling show from beginning to end.
