Please introduce yourselves to the HypnoticAsia readers.
Hello, my name is Chanhyun, and I’m a musician. Nice to meet you! 😀
You recently released your new EP, Muse; Tell us more about it.
I personally think that each person has a different feeling toward his or her inspiration, or muse. You can love, respect, get motivated, or feel jealous. That is why I wanted to represent different feelings for each track in this album.
How does your new title track, “Shh” differ from your debut single?
I think my debut single “Anymore” was telling a more dark and deep story. “Anymore”‘s theme and expressions in the song are definitely more serious. “Shh” also carries a serious topic, but I took a very different approach to express it this time. I’ve always been used to expressing stories or feelings in a rather serious tone, but for this track, I tried various ways to represent them. I think that’s the main difference.
Your new title track is produced by Gray and features Leellamarz, what was it like working with them?
I’ve been listening to their music a lot, so honestly just working with them was a great pleasure! The collaboration made me want to do my absolute best, so that’s why it took me so long to release this particular track. I actually had a period where I wasn’t sure 100 percent about the track, but I gained my belief and confidence in the song again after listening to Leellamarz’s verse and Gray’s final arrangement. They really completed the track beyond my imagination.
In terms of promotions, what can your fans expect this time around?
There are so many things I want to do! I want to meet my fans, perform in front of the crowd, and release more new songs with various concepts. I might be too ambitious, but I really want to achieve them one by one.
Is there an artist you’d like to collaborate with?
I want to work with so many great artists, but at this moment I’d say Giriboy. I listen to his music a lot, and I’m a big fan of his unique vibe and musical style.
What type of artist are you striving to be?
I want to be multi-talented. I know it is very difficult to achieve, but I’m ambitious; I want to expand my spectrum of music, mature more as a human, and present myself with good looks. That’s why I constantly think there are so many things for me to learn and keep working hard to improve myself.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
I think I was mostly influenced by 6lack and Bryson Tiller. When I first started music, I used to follow their musicality and vocal tones a lot as practice. I don’t necessarily follow their styles anymore, but I think my own style has become quite similar to theirs now, haha.
Anything you’d like to say to your fans?
I hope you keep eyes on my future activities as I’ll continue working hard and making more music! Also, if you haven’t already, please check out my newest album ‘MUSE’! Thank you so much 😀
This or That with CHANHYUN
Coffee or Milk tea?
Coffee.
I used to drink a lot of energy drinks such as Monster and Red Bull, but now I drink a lot of coffee instead. I don’t necessarily drink coffee to wake up though. Drinking coffee has become a type of daily ritual for me.
More time or More Money?
More time.
First of all, money doesn’t mean too much to me. If I imagine having 100,000 dollars, I really can’t think of ways to spend it! If I suddenly have that much money, I’d probably deposit it in the bank and forget about it.
On the other hand, time is much more precious to me. I usually feel nervous when I’m working on music and hitting a wall, and that’s when I feel like I’m wasting time.
Hanging out with others or Quiet time alone?
Quiet time alone.
I love staying in. I rarely go out and I only have a few close friends, so I spend most time alone. But I don’t find it lonely! In fact, having my own time really helps me to relax and to recharge. Even when I meet my close friends, we just spend time on our own instead of doing something together.
Eating only ice cream for the rest of your life or Never eating ice cream again?
Eating only ice cream for the rest of my life.
Honestly, I’m not the biggest ice cream fan because I don’t usually prefer eating sweets. However, I absolutely love mint chocolate flavor, so it’s impossible to live without eating mint chocolate ice cream ever again.
Morning person or night owl?
Night owl.
My sense of time has become more normal these days, but when I’m busy and have a lot to handle, I tend to go to sleep around 6~8 am and wake up between 1 pm and 3 pm. I think it depends a lot on my stress level; if I have a lot to think about and feel pressured from anything, I tend to have a completely flipped sleep schedule.
