HYPNOTICASIA: Introduce yourself to the HypnoticAsia readers!
I am a Korean American singer/songwriter and actress currently living in Los Angeles. I love reading, baking, and traveling. I’m also in a band with my sister called, “Meg & Dia,” and when we’re not writing we’re usually on tour! (Except for this year of course).
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you decide to take part in the movie, “I Hate New Year’s”?
I loved the story. I also love holiday films and after doing a bit of research on Tello Films, I was really impressed and excited to work with a strong, empowering group of female storytellers. I’m also a sucker for any romcom, and the relationship between Layne and Cassie in the film, was really special.
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve acted before, so tell us how this movie is different than your other projects?
This movie was the longest project I’ve ever been apart of – meaning I was out for over 2 weeks in Nashville filming. It was neat to be able to get away and really immerse myself in the music city capital of the world with all these new friends. The cast and crew were so incredible to work with and I learned a lot from just watching Candis and Ashley work and play in the scenes. They’re both so professional but also so loose. I also loved blocking scenes with Christin. She makes everything feel so natural and would always let her instincts guide her. If something felt a little off, she was quick to spot it and change it in the moment. She has really good natural instincts. That was a big lesson to me. I always have to go by the book or do things as planned. Christin is good with seeing what’s happening in the moment. If something feels unnatural, it’s gone on the next take. Or if something needs to be added or a line needs to be cut here or there, she was always just flowing with it, not trying to control it too much. I learned that you kind of have to have a loose grip on the steering wheel. Sorry for the cheesy reference but, that’s what it feels like.
HYPNOTICASIA: What was it like working with Ashley Argota? Did you both know each other before meeting for the movie?
No, I did not know Ashley but we had some mutual friends and my little sisters freaked out when they found out she was in the film. They knew here (and loved her) from The Fosters. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Ashley. She’s a very giving person. She’s good at picking up if you’re a little nervous or need a little help, or just to take a breath of fresh air. Even though she has way more experience under her belt than I do, she never made me feel like that. She elevates everyone around her.
HYPNOTICASIA: Can we expect more acting projects from you in the future? Any specific genre you’d like to try?
I surely hope so! I love acting and storytelling and just being a part of the process. Genre doesn’t matter to me as much as the heart of the story. Since this year has been so slow with work, I’ve just been writing short stories and films on my own at home. Maybe one day they will come to fruition. Also, this is totally off the subject, but if you need some holiday tunes this year, check out the Meg & Dia, “December, Darling,” album. Hopefully we can hang out with you in spirit while you’re taking a breath for the holidays.
