JFERRER Interview
What inspired you to create a documentary about Asian American DJs in Southern California, and what do you hope to achieve with this film?
One of the things that inspired me was my involvement in the nightlife industry as a promotions manager. I had the opportunity to collaborate with and promote clubs owned by Asian Americans, which allowed me to forge friendships with DJs and learn about their journeys to success. This experience motivated me to find a way to combine my passion, for both the nightlife scene and the creative industry. Unlike conventional documentaries, our project is not just about storytelling; it’s about empowering and inspiring. This documentary goes into the journeys of up-and-coming Asian American DJs, showcasing their talent, resilience, and the profound impact they have on the music/nightlife industry. We want our viewers to be inspired and motivated by the stories of these talented artists, leaving them with a sense of empowerment and a belief in the possibilities of their own creative journeys.
What do you believe viewers will take away from this documentary, and how do you envision it contributing to the broader conversation about diversity and culture in Southern California’s music scene?
DO WHAT I WANT has the power to ignite a flame of empowerment within the Asian and Asian American communities. It serves as a reminder for individuals to embrace their authenticity and follow their true passions, refusing to conform to societal norms or the cookie-cutter lifestyle. We envision a wave of inspiration, encouraging people to break free from limiting beliefs and embrace the unique paths that await them. DO WHAT I WANT carries a profound significance for Asian American youth. As they witness the success and creativity of these artists, they can find a sense of connection and envision their own future selves achieving greatness. The documentary not only inspires confidence but also fosters a sense of community and unity among Asian Americans, reminding them that they too, can embrace their dreams and make a lasting impact in the world.
Can you give us a sneak peek into what the audience can expect from the live tour experience? How will it enhance or expand upon the narrative of your documentary?
This upcoming film isn’t just about capturing stories on screen; it’s a gateway to the “DO WHAT I WANT TOUR.” This documentary takes talented DJs on a journey, showcasing their skills and charisma at select clubs across Southern California. It’s more than just performances; it’s a chance for them to connect deeply with their audience, making a lasting mark on the nightlife scene. Featuring the talents of SEDUZA, MAZD, ATHENA, JAKOB MESINA, BRKN, WAY2PAC, and JEY, this documentary and tour offer an exclusive, real-time experience for both artists and fans. It’s a mix of film and live performances, bringing “DO WHAT I WANT: SPIN OFF EDITION” and the “DO WHAT I WANT TOUR” together to create an unforgettable impact.
How did the idea for the tour come about, and how does it connect with the themes and stories presented in your documentary about Asian American DJs in Southern California?
Each of these amazing DJs has taken over the dance floors of various clubs, and I was lucky enough to be right there, soaking in their incredible curated music.. When we combine all these incredible energies, it’s like a musical collaboration that’s destined to create unforgettable experiences. Seeing how DJs effortlessly shape different music genres, making them blend and groove together. It encouraged me to try my hand at mixing and infusing my unique touch.
Now, imagine this – a documentary and tour combo, “DO WHAT I WANT: SPIN OFF EDITION” and the “DO WHAT I WANT TOUR,” that allows not just artists but also us, the fans, to go on this incredible journey together in real-time. It’s like being a part of something truly special. It’s the blend of the cinematic storytelling in the documentary with the raw, electrifying energy of live performances. These events aren’t just about music; they’re about the connections we make. When the audience watches the documentary, they will only hear stories of how the DJ’s nights were. This tour gives the audience the opportunity to live it.
Can you tell us about the music and soundtracks featured in the documentary? How did you choose the music, and what role does it play in the storytelling?
DO WHAT I WANT stands as a community project fueled by our shared passion for collaboration and empowering voices within our community. Along our continuous journey, we’ve united with alumni, Loko Moko and Alyssa Goh who were in the previous documentary. Together, we’re crafting a soundtrack for our upcoming project. We’re always seeking individuals who resonate with our vision, inviting them to join forces with us to amplify the impactful message embedded in our documentary. This collaboration isn’t just about creating; it’s about setting a powerful message that resonates deeply within our community.
With filming already underway, JFERRER is making moves to provide an unforgettable experience. Mark your calendars for March 2024 when the sequel is estimated to premiere. In the meantime, check out their social media to stay up-to-date with the film!
