Interview With JUNNY
Please introduce yourself to the readers of HypnoticAsia.
Hi everyone! I’m JUNNY and I sing & write music. 🙂
You made your official debut as a singer-songwriter in 2017. How would you say your music has changed over the years?
My music has changed a lot in terms of sound and how I write because of all the experiences throughout the years but I think the core feeling is still the same, it’s just the way I express it through the music is much more dynamic.
Motivation & Influence
Who or what would you say motivated you to do music?
My older brothers for sure, especially my oldest bro being an artist/painter and becoming successful with his own craft got me to believe and also gain confidence in myself to pursue a career with music.
We know that color and art seem to be your biggest influence for your music. Tell us more about that.
I feel like we all have our own colours that represent the certain points of our lives. I always found that interesting when making music and socially as well. I try to incorporate that into my music and I think it’s safe to say that it’s been working out so far 🙂
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Musicians and artists around me, artists I enjoy listening to and also random strangers I meet can also be my biggest musical influences! I’m a very easily influenced person if that makes any sense. haha
JUNNY Talks Song-Writing & Collaborations
What is your process of writing songs? Is there a difference when you are writing for yourself versus writing for others?
Writing for me, I have endless possibilities when working on a song and everything is up to me. When writing for others, it’s usually finding the right sound for that certain artist or what kind of vibe their company is looking for. There’s beauty in both sides and I try and have the most fun I can whether if the song is for me or someone else.
You recently collaborated with female soloist Chungha on your track, “Color Me”. How did that collaboration come to be?
This project was in the works for a while, I wanted to try a different style and my long time songwriting friend, MinGtion, and I wrote a demo for this song and the moment it was finished, I fell in love with it. I thought CHUNG HA being on the song as a feature would be the greatest thing ever and luckily, through MinGtion we were able to send over the demo and thankfully CHUNG HA liked the song as well! She was absolutely an angel in the studio and I’ve become an even bigger fan after the collaboration. 🙂
Do you have any fun stories from recording any of your collaboration tracks with Chungha, Lullaboy, pH-1, Jay B, etc.?
From the top of my head, I remember CHUNG HA brought in her dog in the studio and it was the most adorable thing haha! Working on “Get Ya!” with pH-1, I was amazed by how fast he could write and just the ideas we shared back and forth was awesome. There’s a lot of memorable moments for sure and I’m a type of person who just dances in the studio most of the time trying to create a vibe and I feel like that’s the most important thing when it comes to working in the studio.
The “blanc” Album
We heard you’ll be releasing your first full-length album! Congratulations! What can your fans and listeners expect from this album?
Thank you so much! The album is called “blanc” and its my first ever full length studio album. The fans can expect basically my experiences from my teenage years till now, talking about love, life and all the above. There is also a musical transition from what I used to put out to what I’m striving for as an artist. It’s the most personal project I’ve ever put out and I hope my fans can feel like they know who I am on a deeper level upon listening to the album from start to finish!
Does the upcoming album tell a story? Can you tell us a little about it?
To put it to a simple form, it all starts with love, then grief, moving on to looking back at myself and my life till now and the hope of what the future holds for me.
Do you have any features on the upcoming album that fans can look forward to?
Although features and collaborating is one of my favourite things to do, I wanted to keep this album as personal as possible so it felt natural for me to carry on the album just with my voice! Not that there are no features at all, it’s just that I want my fans to expect a lot of songs with just me and me alone. 🙂
The “blanc” Tour
While you’ve been busy with album preparations, you’ve also been preparing for your first tour! What can your attendees expect from the upcoming tour?
They can expect a heartfelt show, filled with songs of my own that I’ve put out in the long past, and the recent releases + special cover songs and much more! I’m just so excited for the tour and I really hope my fans will enjoy it!
How have you been preparing for the tour?
Trying to keep my voice healthy, working on my stamina, perfecting the setlist and just running through it over and over with constant revisions to put on the best show as possible for my amazing fans!
Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans who continue to support your music?
Everyday I wake up feeling grateful for all the love and support you give me, you guys are my main motivation to keep working hard on my craft and help me strive to become a better artist. I have nothing but love for you all and I hope you will enjoy my upcoming album “blanc” and hope to see you on the tour!! Love you always JUNNIVERSE! & lastly thank you to HypnoticAsia for this amazing interview! I’ve had so much fun answering these amazing questions!!! 🙂
