Interview with Milky Day
Please introduce yourself to the HypnoticAsia readers.
Hi everyone! My name is Milky Day and I’m a singer-songwriter and producer from New Zealand, currently based in Sydney. I create music in the R&B genre and I’m excited to be part of this interview.
Your latest single “Losing My Grip” is officially out; tell us more about this new song!
I wrote “Losing My Grip” last year when I was going through a low period in my life. I had just been laid off from my job, gone through a breakup, and moved countries to pursue music. Was pretty stressed out and directionless, and the pressure made me feel like I was, I guess, losing grip on reality at times. It was a pretty powerful feeling I was experiencing, so I channeled that energy into this song, hoping that listeners may be able to relate. A lot of my previous releases were more mellow or romantic, so I wanted to switch things up a bit because I recognize that the lows in life are just as important to acknowledge and embrace as the highs in life.
We heard that this new song is just the start of a full EP to come. When can we expect the new album? Also, tell us more about what fans can expect to hear from it.
Yes, that’s right – Losing My Grip is actually the third song out of a total of five. The EP is scheduled to drop around mid-August, and I’m so excited for everyone to hear it! The EP tells a story about the journey of recognizing, struggling with, and overcoming your inner demons. It’s overall darker in mood than some of my previous releases, but you’ll hear hints of the dreamy Milky sound throughout the EP. I also tried to be a bit more experimental with my approach and to really paint a story in the listener’s mind through interesting textures, transitions, and developments.
You’ve released several tracks in the past, many of which have special features. What was it like working with Zuhair, Jimmy Brown, Sway Bleu, and most recently Denise Julia?
Everyone was amazing to work with. I love collaborating with people because in the process, I learn or try things in music production or songwriting that I wouldn’t have been able to think of on my own. It’s also really interesting that most, if not all, of the collaborations happened remotely – this was certainly the case for Zuhair and Jimmy Brown, who I collaborated with remotely way before I actually met them in person. Denise Julia was also a fully remote collaboration, and I’m yet to meet her in person. Sway Bleu on the other hand is a close friend of mine, and we’ve heavily influenced each other’s styles and direction of artistic growth over the years. Spoiler: he’s featuring in my upcoming EP!
Any fun moments or interesting memories from your recording sessions?
To be honest I don’t have any particularly “fun” moments while recording because the recording process all happens in my room. I have a bedroom studio setup at home, so all the magic happens here. I do have some fun memories producing songs with other people though. For example, a few months ago I visited New York City to work on some projects with the NY-based creative collective “Soulace”. One of the weekends, we booked a nice Airbnb together in Long Island and co-produced a couple of songs together. It was really fun to bounce ideas back and forth with the Soulace members while bantering in between.
What or who would you say is your musical inspiration?
I’m musically inspired by whatever I’m listening to at the time, which is always changing depending on my music taste. At the moment I listen to a lot of R&B music. I find it difficult to name specific artists who inspire me, but I do believe that every single song I’ve heard in the past influences my current sound in one way or another.
I’m also inspired by emotions and memories. For example, if I’m reminiscing back to a time/place/person or I’m feeling strongly in a certain way, it becomes much easier to write a song based on those feelings – so music acts almost like an emotional outlet for me.
From your tracks, do you have a favorite song?
I personally like Take it Slow because it’s a bop, and Feeling Blue because I think it showcases some of my rawest emotions!
If you had the chance to collaborate with an artist, who would it be and why?
Because I really enjoy music production, I have the most fun when I’m vibing with another producer and co-producing something. For this reason, although there are lots of artists I’d like to work with, I think I would really enjoy working with artists like Galimatias or Lophiile. I have a lot of respect for their production skills and creative vision, and my own music has been influenced by their production style as well.
What are you wanting to achieve with your music?
I’ve found through the messages and comments my fans leave that my music seems to be a source of reassurance for listeners. Everyone goes through ups and downs in life, so I want my music to be a reminder that you’re not alone when you’re having a hard time or feeling down. I’d love for listeners to feel the raw emotion of the music, picture the images I paint, and gain a sense of comfort in my lyrics.
Is there anything you’d like to say to those who have been supporting your music?
I can’t thank everyone enough for listening to and sharing my music. I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am without the ongoing support I’ve received from my listeners, and I appreciate every comment or DM I get. I’m hoping my fans know that I love making music for you all and that I’ll continue to keep releasing good tunes – I have some big projects and shows coming up soon, so keep an eye out!
