Peter Chun (also known as SOFTSERVEBOY) celebrates his first #1 hit track, “riBBon” and HypnoticAsia brings you an exclusive interview with the talented producer and songwriter.
Chun is a Los Angeles-based producer and songwriter with impressive credits to his name. Chun has produced and written music for the Big Hit Entertainment reality show, I-Land, where popular rookie group ENHYPHEN was created. He has also written for well-known artists like Jackson Wang, EXO-CBX, OWV, and more. Most recently, he worked on the track “riBBon” which is the title track on BamBam‘s solo debut mini-album. “riBBon” has already achieved number 1 and is topping the charts while the music video has garnered over 14M views in just a little over a day!
That #1 Feeling For Peter Chun!
When Chun was asked how he felt about reaching first place, he revealed,
Thank you so much, it still feels like a dream honestly. Just waiting on someone to wake me up! As only my industry peers can relate, getting a placement with any artist is such a big accomplishment. And especially with an artist’s caliber like BamBam, I’m just so grateful that not only someone like him took it but that it reached #1! I will never forget the day when I got the call saying ribbon got placed with BamBam.

Have you already listened to “riBBon”? If not, what are you waiting for!?
Was “riBBon” really made for BamBam?
We asked Chun about what the process was like working on the track for BamBam and to our surprise, he said it was originally a track made for EXO-SC!
Funny story with this song, the song was originally called “Pure” and was for EXO-SC. And because it was for EXO’s summer release I just wanted to make a fun summer jam where the whole concept would be having fun with your friends. So I tried to get the vibe of “Blueberry Faygo” by Lil Mosey but reimagined into a KPOP version. Once I had the track ready, I called my good friends SQVARE and Andreas to topline it and sent it off to Korea! After I heard BamBam wanted to take this song, we were grateful to have someone like earattack to touch up the song to make it even better. Think of this song from start to finish as a baton race, everyone clutched their parts!

And they really did do well as the hit track has been topping the charts since its release!
Working With Others
While “riBBon” is the first time Chun achieves #1 in Korea, he has worked on several tracks that have charted in the past. He has worked with BamBam’s fellow GOT7 member, Jackson Wang for the track “Transmit.” The song was for the Panthepack project and he collaborated with WD, Candace Sosa and ADN. This reached #2 in China!
Chun states,
I’d like to not make my songwriting session as a “job” or some chore we have to do. Music is supposed to be fun you know? Yes, there are times where it feels like a math problem that takes hours to solve and sometimes it just solves itself. Transmit was one of those songs that just came out in minutes. We were just all in my studio just vibing and having a blast. Cherry on top was that it got placed!

He also states, “Every track I create, I try to have a strong concept. For example, my placement early this year “Scattered” with a JPOP group called OWV, I imagined a song like Justin Beiber’s “Coldwater” imagined into a JPOP style track.” Chun has also announced that he would love to work with artists like KAI of EXO and Big Hit Entertainment’s rookie boy group, ENHYPHEN in the future! “It will happen, I believe it!”
Chun’s Influence
The influence for music “comes from two juxtaposing sides,” says Chun. The producer and songwriter grew up listening to pop & rock music such as John Mayer, Green Day, and Foo Fighters, “so I love guitar ‘chord’ driven songs.” But he reveals that at the same time, he fell in love with, “producers like Timbaland and Pharrell, especially with the way they laid out the drums on tracks with minimal chord progressions.” So to summarize it, his influence would be, “hard hitting hip hop style drums with pop chords!”
Future Releases by Peter Chun!
Chun has also announced that he has two(2) songs being released with an upcoming boy group that is set to debut very soon! He hopes everyone enjoys them when they are released as he personally think the tracks are “executed phenomenally given that the boys are so young.”
Stay tuned! Until then, keep streaming “riBBon!”
