We had the opportunity to talk with Li Yueru, the explosive center for the LA Sparks, in an exclusive interview to learn more about her journey from the Chinese courts to the WNBA. Li, a rising star in women’s basketball, offers the Sparks a special combination of form, talent, and willpower. We talk about her transitional experiences to the American game and her adjustment to the WNBA’s fast-paced environment. You won’t want to miss Li Yueru’s story—from her early years in China’s professional league to leaving her imprint on the world stage—as she is a formidable force.
How was your experience representing China in the Olympics?
To me, it was a very valuable experience. We faced a lot of obstacles from both inside and outside of our team, and we learned to overcome it all together. As a team, I believe it was a very valuable time, and we all just hoped to learn and improve from it.
For viewers, your match against Spain was memorable with 31 points scored by you alone. Was there a memorable moment for you?
Of course, for me, the match against Spain was very important. But, at the same time, my accomplishment was only possible due to our teamwork. The culmination of mine and my teammates’ hard work is what resulted in such an unforgettable match. I also hope we can continue to improve and produce even better results in future games.
Is this your first full year in the WNBA?
For my first year, I was with the Chicago Sky. But, that year, due to various reasons, I joined the team late, and wound up leaving quite early as well. I probably only played for about a month there. So although this year was not technically my first year, it’s the first time I’ve been on the team for a full season. I’m very grateful to have this opportunity to take part in a full season like this, and next season, I hope we can do even better as a team. I personally hope I can improve more, too, and that we can make it to the Playoffs next year.
You mentioned in an interview that you now feel more comfortable playing thanks to your coach and teammates. How has your first full season experience in the WNBA and LA Sparks been?
I’ve been able to truly feel my improvement this year, both skill-wise on the court and in my self-confidence. My mindset has also evolved, and I’ve become more eager to do more. But, it’s no secret that I’ve faced many different obstacles this year in the WNBA. I focused a lot on overcoming the same obstacles from previous games, but was met with different obstacles in addition. This has really put me to the test and forced me to learn how to adapt and learn quickly, so I think it has been a great lesson to me, too. My coach and my teammates have been such a great help to me in overcoming these obstacles, it makes me want to improve more and more so I can do the same for them.
How can fans show their support for the WNBA, LA Sparks, and Li Yueru?
First and foremost, I do wish everyone could come see our games in person. But, I know that’s not possible for everyone, as I also know my teammates and friends China and other countries, for example, wouldn’t be able to come here to watch. However, we also greatly appreciate fans sharing our games online and telling others about us.
Is there anything you believe fans can do to help the growth of women’s basketball?
We also hope more students, athletes, and children can be aware of women’s basketball, because statistically, women’s basketball does have less viewers and supporters globally. Just by spreading the news of games by word of mouth or online, we can bring more attention to the sport and athletes. We’re extremely grateful to fans for allowing the players in the WNBA, the WCBA, and other women basketball players around the world to be seen.
