Interview with Thai global superstar, NuNew
Hello! Please introduce yourself to the HypnoticAsia readers.
Hi HypnoticAsia! I am NuNew. I am a singer and actor from Thailand. So nice to meet all of you!
Congratulations on your debut Japanese single, “First Date at Shibuya”. Can you tell us what this milestone means to you and how it feels to break into the Japanese music scene?
Thank you so much! I had visited Japan many times before on my travels as well as for my work as an actor. When I heard about my debut in Japan, I was very excited and thrilled, so releasing “First Date at Shibuya” is really a dream come true. Japan has such a rich and vibrant music culture, and I feel incredibly honored to have this opportunity to share my voice with a wider audience. It is also very exciting to explore new musical styles and connect with fans in a new way. This milestone feels like the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my career, and I am grateful for the love and support that has made this possible.
How did the collaboration with Thai and Japanese music legends like Amp Achariya, Hisashi Kondo, and Daichi Hideyuki Suzuki come about? What was it like working with such esteemed talent?
Miss Amp Achariya and Mr. Hisashi Kondo are the producers of this song. I have been working with Amp Achariya (also known as the queen of T-POP) for a very long time. She has written many songs for me, and she has done a great job as always. Hisashi-san has been involved in the production of many J-POP classics for many years and is very famous in Japan, so I’m very grateful for the chance to work with him. When I first received the song, my thought was, ‘Kawaii!’. I first received a version that had only the melody without the words, but I was hooked at that point. When the backing tracks were added, I liked it even more. For me, it was both a joy and a great challenge to release a song in Japanese in Japan.
This song, “First Date at Shibuya,” talks about a date in the vibrant Shibuya district, a place that perfectly captures the youthful and romantic energy of the lyrics. We also filmed the Music Video in Shibuya, which brings the setting to life and adds a special connection to the story.
While the song paints a picture of a puppy love story between a couple on their first date, it is more than just a sweet tale of romance. The song carries a deeper message—it is about encouraging and cheering up anyone who might be starting something new or facing a challenge.
You do not have to be in love or on a date to enjoy this song. It is a melody that can lift your spirits no matter what you’re going through. If you are feeling sad or uncertain, I hope this song makes you feel better and gives you the courage to take that first step toward something exciting.
Your music has garnered international attention and sparked trends across social media platforms. How does it feel knowing your music resonates with so many fans worldwide, especially in countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines?
Music has always been my way of expressing emotions and connecting with others, so knowing that my songs resonate with people across the world is such an incredible feeling. Seeing fans celebrate my music, whether through hashtags or their own creative posts, inspires me to keep doing my best. It is amazing how music can cross languages and borders, creating a shared connection that brings people together.
“First Date at Shibuya” combines a neo-city pop sound. How would you describe your personal music style, and do you see yourself exploring more genres in the future?
I love to sing sentimental ballad songs. It can be either a love song or a sad song. So I am happy to sing a love song that is a sentimental ballad. In the future, you will definitely see me doing music with other genres. I have tried to release music and experiment with different genres in the past, so no one will feel bored with my songs. Although I enjoy singing a sentimental ballad song, performing at the music events in Thailand requires me to perform an upbeat and dance song too. If I were to sing only ballad songs in that setting, the attendees would likely feel bored watching my performance. You will definitely see the different shades of my music for sure in the future.
With the song being a mix of Thai and Japanese influence, how do you balance these cultural elements in your music while ensuring your unique identity shines through?
I think it is about staying true to who I am while embracing new influences. For “First Date at Shibuya,” I had the chance to work with amazing Thai and Japanese producers who helped blend these elements beautifully. It was a learning experience, especially when it came to Japanese pronunciation and vocal nuances, but I focused on expressing the emotions behind the song in a way that felt authentic to me. I guess this is also a reflection of my journey, and I am so proud of how it turned out.
Your voice is described as crystal-clear and full of excitement, especially in this track. How do you approach using your vocal style to convey the emotions in your music?
Thank you for the kind words! For me, singing is all about storytelling. When I approach a song (or even when I am acting), I try to understand the emotions behind the lyrics and think about how I can bring them to life with my voice. With “First Date at Shibuya,” I wanted listeners to feel the excitement and tenderness of a very first date in a vibrant city.
The reaction from fans on social media has been overwhelming, with hashtags trending worldwide. How important is fan support to you, and how do you stay connected with your audience across different countries?
My fans mean the world to me. That is also the reason I am able to do what I love. Their support motivates me to keep growing and pushing myself to improve. I try to stay connected through social media, where I can interact with them and see their creative expressions, whether it is fan art, covers, or heartfelt messages. It is so heartwarming! It is so amazing to see how music can create such a strong bond between us, no matter where we are in the world.
Given your growing international presence, do you feel a responsibility to represent Thai culture on the global stage? If so, how do you incorporate this into your work?
I am very proud of my Thai heritage, and I see it as a privilege to share it with the world. Whether it is through the stories I tell, the music I create, or the values I uphold, I want to be a bridge that connects Thai culture with others. At the same time, I believe in embracing diversity and learning from different cultures—it is what makes music so powerful.
What are your goals for the future? Do you have any exciting plans for your career, such as further collaborations, tours, or upcoming projects?
In 2025, I will have multiple projects in both acting and in music. I want everyone to pay attention to Zomvivor and Beauty and the Beat movies because of the characters. Zomvivor is my zombie film which will have a character that has not been seen before. The costume, the acting and the character’s lifestyle are totally different from previous roles. For Beauty and the Beat, everyone will see me acting in a full-fledged comedy film for the very first time. I hope to receive support from everyone.
Besides the two projects I mentioned earlier, I will have a series, The Next Prince, that I hope everyone is looking forward to. I will be releasing more songs next year which will lead up to my first album. I will also hold a concert, which might be a solo or a duo project, so I want everyone to keep a lookout and support all of my projects.
As someone who’s quickly becoming a global icon, what advice would you give to young aspiring artists who dream of following in your footsteps?
I would say the journey might be challenging at times, but every step is worth it if you put in your 200% and are passionate about what you do. Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you, and never stop learning and growing. Most importantly, stay true to who you are—your uniqueness is what will make you stand out.
