K-POP artists performing at The Observatory in Santa Ana doesn’t come as a surprise anymore but for Yerin Baek, it was a night to remember. As she makes her stop in SoCal for the first time on her tour, she couldn’t help but state that this was one of her largest venue.
The singer-songwriter held her OC show at The Observatory on December 4th, 2022. The artist got her start under JYP Entertainment through the duo, 15&. After breaking from 15&, she ventured out as a solo artist and did surprisingly well! With her sultry voice and indie vibes, the female vocalist shot up to fame.
Knowing this, it was no surprise that we came into a full house at The Observatory. The seemingly calm crowd packed into the venue grabbing their beverage of choice and finding a space to stand and await the start of the show. As the curtains parted, Yerin Baek stood front and center stage with the light shining on her. She wore a long flowy floral dress with long brown boots surrounded by her band. She started off the concert with her track “lovegame”, followed by “You’re so lonely now, so you need me back by your side again”. At the end of this song, she paused and looked around noticing she unexpectedly had a lot Korean fans in the crowd and then mentioned that she’s bad at small talk and didn’t know what to say so she’d sing instead.
After singing a few tracks, Yerin then tried small talk again by telling everyone that this is the biggest venue she’s been too. She then went on to tell them that when she was backstage, she was nervous. Baek Yerin decided to go back to singing and sped it up with “HOMESWEETHOME”. She definitely enjoyed herself by dancing around the stage during this song.
Throughout the concert, fans kept yelling out comments such as “you’re pretty” and “you’re cute”. Since she wasn’t sure how to respond back, she told the audience they’re also cute. Yerin Baek then went on to sing two more songs “loner” and “loveless”. However, these were special acoustic versions just for the USA tour. The audience swayed along to the music with her. In between, the audience also gave love to her band which shyly accepted the comments.
At this point, all her nervousness and shyness seemed to have melted away. She decided to sit on the side of the stage so fans fought over which side she should sit on. When she finally sat, fans were worried as the edge of the stage is lifted. She jokingly told them to be sure to catch her. During this song, she accepted a cute small wrapped fan gift while singing “can i b u”. When she got up, she was afraid she kicked a fan but thankfully not!
Since the crowd was dominantly Korean, the female vocalist decided to sing a song in Korean “Bye bye my blue”. This excited the audience as they sang along. Followed by another popular track “maybe it’s not our fault” which the fans turned on their phone lights for, before moving on to the song “popo”.
A fact that many of her fans know about her is that she is a big fan of Amy Winehouse and wrote two songs about the artist. She sang both “Amy” and “true lover” as she hopes to someday be like her. Yerin then performed a fun remix version of “Our love is great”. She definitely enjoyed dancing to and the crowd enjoyed watching.
As a great artist, she takes her music seriously. During the show, she missed the queue to begin “Pisces”, but as she’s not shy when it comes to music, Yerin asked her band to restart. Then went on to say goodbye before her last song “0310”. A fan handed her a drawing which she accepted and carefully placed on her stool.
For those who attend concerts regularly, you know this isn’t the last song. As she left the stage, her fans started yelling out “encore” and “one more song”. She came back out to “bubbles&mushrooms” before officially ending the night with “Square(2017)”. Yerin Baek is one of those artists that are definitely much better live, even though her recorded tracks are great! There is just something special and different when listening to her perform live. Her tour is not over yet so be sure to catch one of her stops if she’s attending near you!
