Singer Roy Kim seems to believe in paying it forward. The winner of Mnet’s survival audition program “Superstar K4” is donating part of his winnings to this year’s Yoo Jae Ha Music Concours, a songwriting competition held in commemoration of a famous balladeer and songwriter from the 1980s.
Out of Kim’s 300 million won ($284,000) winnings, he has given the last 30 million to the 24th Yoo Jae Ha competition, which is being held on Sunday at Hanyang University, according to Korea JoongAng Daily affiliate Ilgan Sports.
Kim promised to donate all the prize money to others when he won the survival program.
“Kim’s donation really helped us a lot,” said the organizer of the competition.
“It is the first time we’ve had an individual donor, and it means something that he donated the money he won.” Although Yoo released only one album, shortly before dying in a car accident in 1987, he wrote many of the beloved ballads from that era.
The Yoo Jae Ha Music Concours started in 1990, and many famous local singers have participated over the years, including Yoo Hee-yeol, who hosts “Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook” on KBS.
