Silence iz Mine (known commonly as SiM) opened to a roaring crowd on April 23rd, 2024 at the Belasco in Los Angeles. With the music vibrating through everyone’s bodies and rumbling through the whole venue, SiM was welcomed by hundreds of enthusiastic fans singing along to some of their most popular hits. Composed of four members, SiM was founded by vocalist MAH in 2004 in Kanagawa, Japan. Though they had a few member changes in the early years, the current lineup with SHOW-HATE (guitar/keyboards), SIN (bass), and GODRi (drums) has been steady since 2009 as their music took off.
The self-identified reggae punx metal band certainly carved a unique niche with their musical style. The band incorporates elements of punk and reggae into their nu and heavy metal base for an interesting sound. Though at first listen, SiM’s music may seem primarily metalcore, the reggae elements are more evident in songs like “KiSS of DEATH” and “GUNSHOTS.”
SiM has had relative success domestically in Japan! They have charted on the Japan Oricon and Billboard and performed at the Nippon Budokan. It was not until the 2022 release of the song “The Rumbling” for the anime Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 that they exploded on the international music scene with renown. The song reached No. 1 on the US Hard Rock Songs chart, No. 2 on the US Digital Rock chart, No. 5 on the US Bubbling Under the Hot 100, and more. Their success continued in 2023 with “UNDER THE TREE,” which was also used as the ending theme for Attack on Titan: The Final Season. It also reached No. 10 on the US Hard Rock Songs chart and No. 18 on the US Digital Rock chart.
Opening Acts
Prior to the main show, attendees also had the chance to enjoy performances from multiple opening acts! The show started with Crystal Lake, Within Destruction, and Fame on Fire. Japanese metalcore band Crystal Lake traveled with SiM from Tokyo. They set the tone for the night with a great start hyping up the audience. Originating from Slovenia, metal and deathcore band Within Destruction followed with an act equally as passionate as the screaming fans. It ended with the lead vocalist crowd surfing amongst the fans. American rock band Fame on Fire came more locally from Florida. They had the crowd vibing with their music and all warmed up just in time for SiM to hop on stage.
Main Act
The excitement from the crowd was palpable as each of the band members ran out and took their positions, culminating in screams as MAH bounced onto the stage and greeted the masses. Immediately launching into the upbeat track “DO THE DANCE,” the audience followed along and jumped to the beat in unison. They head banged to the music and later ran wild in an enormous mosh pit with later songs. “DO THE DANCE” rolled right into “KiSS of DEATH,” “UNDER THE TREE,” and “SWEET DREAMS” with no pause, compounding the frenetic energy.
Occasionally, like with “Blah Blah Blah” or “GUNSHOTS,” MAH would briefly sing a single iconic line from the song in acapella. He would also do short simple dance moves to see if the audience recognized it, and then encouraged fans to sing and dance along. With back to back performances of each song, there was no time for the exhilaration to cool and they were off again with the rest of the setlist.
SiM are experts at rousing and working the crowd, drumming up fervor and enthusiasm and encouraging fans to have fun and sing along. MAH was very down to earth during the short breaks between songs. He interacted with the crowd in English, receiving cheers at his jokes and roars of approval back from the people.
The setlist comprised primarily selections from SiM’s most recent album PLAYDEAD released September 27, 2023. The crowd was also treated to a few of the band’s older classics like “Blah Blah Blah,” “Devil in Your Heart,” “KiLLING ME,” and “f.a.i.t.h.” SiM also added “GUNSHOTS,” “TxHxC,” and “SWEET DREAMS” to the list of songs performed at the Los Angeles stop. This replaced “PLAYDEAD,” “HiDE AND SEEK,” and “BASEBALL BAT” which were seen at the previous three stops.
